Concrete, Grading & Excavation in Valdese, NC

Valdese, Drexel and the eastern Burke County communities are a short run from our regular Morganton work, and we are on job sites here often. Concrete slabs and driveways, building pad grading, gravel drive repair, drainage and site prep for new construction.

This side of Burke County has gentler ground than the northern half — rolling rather than steep — which keeps site prep costs down. The red clay is the same though, and it governs how anything poured or spread here has to be based.

A lot of the housing stock in these communities dates to the mill era, which means we do steady work on aging concrete, settled driveways, drainage that was never really adequate, and outbuildings on foundations that have shifted.

What the ground here is actually like

Terrain & soils

Eastern Burke County is rolling foothills with red clay over saprolite and relatively few rock problems compared to the northern end of the county. Grades are moderate and generally workable without benching. The dominant issue is the clay itself — poor drainage, low bearing capacity when saturated, and seasonal shrink-swell movement. Older properties in this area frequently have driveways and slabs placed decades ago directly on that clay with little or no stone base, which is why they have settled and cracked.

Permits & local rules

The Town of Valdese and the Town of Drexel permit work inside their limits, with Burke County Building & Development Services covering unincorporated areas. Septic permits come from Burke County Environmental Health, and state erosion control requirements apply at one acre of land disturbance.

Valdese questions

Can you replace an old cracked driveway in Valdese?

We can. Many older driveways in these communities were poured directly on clay with little or no stone base, which is exactly why they cracked and settled. Replacement means removing the old concrete, building a proper compacted base and pouring reinforced concrete over it. Repouring on the original base just repeats the failure.

How much does a concrete driveway cost here?

Figure roughly $8 to $14 per square foot installed for a reinforced concrete driveway, so a typical two-car driveway commonly lands between $5,000 and $12,000. Removing and hauling old concrete, and any grading or drainage work needed underneath, are quoted separately so you can see what each part costs.

Do you handle demolition of old outbuildings?

Sheds, garages, barns, mobile homes, old foundations. We take them all down, haul the debris, and grade the ground back so the footprint's usable instead of left as a hole.

Is Valdese in your regular service area?

Very much so. It is a short run from our regular Morganton work, so scheduling here is usually straightforward and travel does not add meaningfully to the cost.
