Excavation & Grading Contractor in Lake Lure, NC
Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge are some of the most dramatic ground in our service area, and some of the most demanding to build on. AllTrax handles homesite clearing, driveway cuts and rebuilds, hillside grading, retaining and the erosion control work these lots require.
Lots around the lake and up the gorge are steep, often narrow, frequently accessed by a single winding drive, and sitting above water that everything eventually drains into. Site work here has to account for all of that — and the gorge's history of flooding and slope failure is a reminder of what happens when it does not.
Whether it is a vacation property that needs the driveway put back after a wet winter or a new build that needs a pad benched into a hillside, we plan the water first and the dirt second.
Working in Lake Lure
What the ground here is actually like
Terrain & soils
The Hickory Nut Gorge is characterized by extreme relief, exposed and shallow rock, thin soils on the upper slopes and colluvium accumulated at the base. Runoff is concentrated and fast, funneled by the gorge topography, and storm events here can produce flows far beyond what the size of a drainage area would suggest elsewhere. Slope stability is a genuine consideration rather than a formality — cuts need to be benched, exposed faces need to be stabilized quickly, and anything discharging onto a slope needs an armored outlet.
Permits & local rules
The Town of Lake Lure permits work inside town limits and has its own zoning and stormwater provisions, with Rutherford County covering unincorporated areas and the Village of Chimney Rock permitting separately. Work near the lake or its tributaries carries additional buffer, sediment and stormwater requirements. Septic permits come from Rutherford County Environmental Health, and the steep, thin soils here often require engineered systems.

Lake Lure questions
Do you work on steep lake lots?
Steep, tight lots are normal for us in this area. They call for compact equipment, benched cuts, retaining where the grade demands it, and erosion control put in place before the cut rather than after. We'll tell you during the site walk if a lot genuinely can't be worked safely.
What does erosion control cost around Lake Lure?
It scales with the slope and the volume of water involved. Ditching and surface work often runs $1,000 to $3,000. Riprap armoring and bank resloping on gorge terrain typically starts around $3,000 and rises with length and stone quantity. Given what water does in this gorge, it is not the place to cut the drainage budget.
Are there extra rules for working near the lake?
There are. The Town of Lake Lure has its own zoning and stormwater provisions, and work near the lake or feeding streams carries buffer and sediment control requirements on top of county and state rules. We confirm what applies to your parcel before scheduling anything.
Can you repair a driveway damaged by storm runoff?
We can, and we'd rather fix why it happened at the same time. Storm damage in the gorge is usually a symptom of water being concentrated somewhere it shouldn't be. Rebuilding the surface without adding capacity to carry that water off just means doing it again after the next big rain.
