Concrete & Grading Contractor in Hickory, NC

In Hickory and Catawba County, we're mostly known for concrete work and the grading that goes under it: garage and shop slabs, driveways, foundations, walkways, equipment pads, commercial flatwork.

Hickory sits in the upper Piedmont, so the ground is generally flatter and easier to work than our western markets. Site prep is quicker and cheaper here, which puts more of the budget where it belongs: in the base and the concrete rather than in moving dirt.

We handle both residential and commercial projects in this market, and because the same crew grades the site and pours the concrete, there is no gap between the two where problems usually get buried.

What the ground here is actually like

Terrain & soils

Catawba County is upper Piedmont — gentle to rolling topography, red clay and clay loam over saprolite, and relatively few rock or slope constraints. Sites are efficient to prepare and access is rarely a limiting factor. Clay subgrade remains the controlling condition for anything poured: it drains slowly, loses bearing when wet and moves seasonally, so a compacted stone base under slabs and drives is what determines whether the concrete performs. On the flatter ground here, establishing positive drainage away from structures takes deliberate grading rather than relying on natural fall.

Permits & local rules

The City of Hickory permits work inside city limits, with Catawba County covering unincorporated areas and neighboring municipalities permitting separately. Septic permits come from Catawba County Environmental Health, and state erosion and sedimentation control requirements apply at one acre of disturbance.

Hickory questions

Do you take commercial concrete work in Hickory?

Equipment pads, approaches, sidewalks, parking area flatwork, slab work for commercial buildings, plus the grading and base prep underneath. That's regular work for us here. Call with the scope and schedule and we'll tell you plainly whether it fits our crew.

How much does a garage slab cost in Hickory?

A four-inch reinforced slab runs roughly $7 to $12 per square foot installed, putting a 24x24 garage slab in the $4,000 to $7,000 range. Going to five or six inches with rebar for heavier loads adds cost but is what we recommend anywhere trucks, lifts or equipment will sit.

Is Hickory within your service area?

It is, on the eastern edge of where we work regularly, roughly forty minutes from Morganton. Travel's factored into the estimate rather than added later, and for larger projects it makes very little difference to the total.

Can you do the grading and the concrete together?

That is how we prefer to work. When one crew handles both, the base gets built to what the slab actually needs and nobody is pouring over someone else's subgrade and hoping. It also removes the scheduling gap between two contractors.
